Update
History
9th March 2005
Vaguely remembering that I used to run a site for creative words, I revisited and the
shame of such an old site existing with my name on it prompted a rewrite!
So, the dictionary has now been converted into a custom written web application.
Hopefully it will be useful to people. You can try it here.
9th January 2002 v1.37
The applet will still need to be running for a while yet until the new system is
finished. I received some reports that v1.35 wasn't working in some
browsers so I recompiled it and rewrote a bit of the code.
8th January 2002
I have started work on the online database system. It will take a while
though, even converting the words text file into a database format is relatively
laborious.
Apparently this website was in a 2002 Page a Day calendar a few days ago. That is rather flattering so I suppose I should repay the compliment by linking to their site at www.pageaday.com.
7th January 2002 v1.35
OK, this is ridiculous, I really need to update this site! First of all
the design looks horribly dated now. Times have moved on since 1997
*:-) Also, I really need to get rid of this Java applet model. With that
positive thought I have moved the site onto a different webserver (this makes it easier
for me to administrate) and will start coding a rudimentary new database
engine.
For the time being I've tweaked the Java applet to make it load at least ten times faster and reinstated about 100 or so lost words (for some reason the old words file was on the webserver). The word count is now at 296.
Finally, I've scrapped the hit counter at 42000 odd visits since 3rd December 1997.
14th November 2000
I'm thinking about updating the site with a proper searchable database. It
will all depend on time though...
29th September 2000
Wow, has it really been so long?!
All the words contained on this website are now available for download in the
form of PawPrints, my random e-mail signature generator. View the PawPrints
Website to see how you can have random Creative Words in your e-mail
signatures within minutes!
4th July 1999
Added two new humorous articles.
Also courageously put a link up to a few of my poems
*:-)
2nd May 1999
Anybody heard of atiocination? Its not in my
dictionary... Over 270 words now written up.
17th April 1999
Many thanks to Entertainment Weekly
Magazine for mentioning my pages in their April issue #480. The site
got a B+ rating which I'm glad to say beat some other featured sites such as The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber
*:-)
18th March 1999
The Big Move: The site has now been moved to a professional server, please be
patient and report if any links become broken during transit!
I have also decided that "Creative Word Generator" is not a very catchy name so
have renamed my pages to simply "Celerity Words." If anybody fancies
being incredibly nice some graphics reflecting the new title would be greatly appreciated!
11/03/1999
OK, I messed up, I admit it! My new design caused some pages to be illegible for
Netscape users. Those who suffered, please accept my humble and contrite
apologies! Thanks to those who wrote to let me know as well. I have
simplified the graphics as a temporary fix and added a few new words as well.
13/02/1999
After a lengthy hiatus I have at last changed to a more readable layout and added some new
words! In my defence I have been extremely busy. For anyone who is interested,
I have graduated, visited Hong Kong and started full time employment as a software
engineer. For the vaguely interested my personal homepages are now located at www.sheik.co.uk/adam/
30/05/1998
Not much has happened for a while - I've had exams!
Pronunciation will now be added where appropriate. Over 170 words now in the archive.
05/03/1998
Made the screen size larger to allow longer descriptions.
Now over 150 words in the archive.
24/02/1998 v1.34
First attempt at trying to fix Netscape problem where descriptions of words don't quite
fit.
Also added a few archery terms for the fantasy writers!
17/02/1998 v1.32
The search engine has been enhanced to find substrings. ie: you can now type
"celer" and it will find "celerity"
10/02/1998
Since adding the search facility I have started tagging "keywords" onto the end
of some descriptions. Please note that these are not necessarily synonyms of the word,
rather that they have been chosen to be picked up by a relevant search. In other
words they shouldn't be considered to be part of the definition. Hopefully people
won't find these keywords too intrusive but at some point I may print them in smaller
letters at the bottom (this means a recode though) - let me know what you think.
09/02/1998 V1.29
Made the search engine a tad better - but it still only searches for whole words
unfortunately.
05/02/1998
I've split some sections of the site up as it was getting a bit unwieldy.
Astute visitors will also note the optimistic new "Readers
Submissions" pages. Feedback is positively demanded! *:-)
04/02/1998 V1.27
Well I've finally added a search utility to the program which turns it from a fun toy into
(hopefully) a useful writing resource.
Please note: I've only just added the search code in and its quite possible that there are
bugs! If you find any please don't panic, just calmly mail me the details! *:-)
03/02/1998
Grateful thanks to `rebekah' for submitting some great words and also for verifying some
of the more doubtful ones.
25/01/1998
I found some notes I made years ago about words that I can't find in my dictionary. I've
put them in anyway with a note that they are unlikely to be in any common dictionaries.
For those interested, I found them in one of the Oxford English press books on usage of
language (I forget the title). The dictionary I use to verify words is a two volume
Readers Digest Great Illustrated Dictionary and is fairly comprehensive (as well as being
a delight to read on account of all the nice pictures!).
16/01/1998
More words added, there are now over fifty in the archive but any submissions would be
appreciated!
13/01/1998
Just a quick `Thank you' to those of you who have taken the time to send me an e-mail, it
is most appreciated! I have also tried to make the applet refresh itself if you
click on it (in my browser, IE4, if you scroll the page rapidly up and down it messes up
the display!)
19/12/1997
I will start to put the classification of each word in from now on (noun, adjective etc)
26/11/1997
The program now reads in the words from a text file. This makes the site much easier to
maintain but has the drawback that some browsers may not allow Java to read the file. If
you have any problems let me know!
